Fall Is Upon Us
Oh, Fall in Florida. Even though we don’t get to enjoy the changing of the leaves, we definitely have a transitional period when the days are getting shorter and the air is getting less humid and cooler. Obviously this picture wasn’t taken in Florida. That doesn’t mean we can’t learn something from it. The fallen leaves have killed most of the turf under the trees that you can see to the right of the picture is still nice and green. This does apply to us in Florida. Fallen and neglected leaves can be harmful to your turf, and should be removed before the damage is done.
Fall is also a good time to test your irrigation. Run the zones and see if you have any sprinkler heads that have been blocked by overgrown turf or groundcovers. Debris can also build up in the heads blocking the path for water to get through.
The last thing I want to recommend is to do a fall cleanup. Coming out of the hot, wet summer months flower beds can be over run with weeds, palms have shed a lot of dead fronds and should be removed. Hedges and ornamentals can be over grown and out of control. it is also a good idea to put down some new mulch after the weeds have been taken care of.
